Communications training for healthcare professionals

Good communication skills from primary care health professionals are crucial for translating the results of clinical assessments and research into practice, improving the outcome of interventions and enhancing the engagement of health service users.
Effective clinical practice related to obesity is hampered by high rates of negative judgement, bias and stigma which can adversely impact engagement with and the outcome of healthcare interventions. In contrast, efforts to enhance communication and reduce stigma include: improving education, evoking empathy and employing a weight-inclusive approach.
We have developed an immersive learning and simulation-based training tool to help healthcare professionals develop respectful and empowering communication between children and adolescents with obesity and their parents.
